Introduction

After completing my BSc. in Business Economics at Haarlem Business University, I won a scholarship for an MSc Business Administration course at Nyenrode Business University. During my time here I got involved in campus recruitment, helping scout new talent at Nyenrode.

I soon realised recruitment was an up and coming industry sector. There was rapid international expansion compared to established multinationals in other sectors. I was hooked.

So I decided to do my research thesis on recruitment. I mapped the sector, the interesting niches and its competitors. It quickly became apparent that one player stood out from crowd because of its fast growing international expansion, different business model and market approach: SThree.

After graduation it was clear where I was heading. I applied at SThree and got the opportunity to start in a new team. They had just begun a new business unit within the existing Amsterdam office. That was March 2008.

My role

As a trainee I got the opportunity to set up a new market niche from scratch. Through a mixture of hard work, expertise and training from SThree, I was able to set up the market quickly. Within three months, I was promoted to Consultant. Within a year I was a Senior Consultant. I loved the fact that only one year after graduating, I was speaking to leaders and directors in my specific industry sector - negotiating and advising them in their boardrooms.

The further we grew the market, the more potential for growth we saw. This is when I got the opportunity to build up a team and develop my career in management. We became very profitable. And remember, this was during a time when the whole world was in a recession. Our competitors were closing offices. We went in the opposite direction – tripling the size of the team and profits! We became one of the most profitable and fastest growing teams in the company. Within nine months I had three management promotions. My career was on the fast-track.

Nowadays I’m managing a team full of ambitious, hard-working and highly educated people. I also speak regularly to industry leaders and I’m making strategic decisions on how to develop the team further. I get a lot of joy and satisfaction from this. I couldn’t have imaged, when I started my studies, that I would be achieving so much in recruitment and having so much fun doing it!

Training

The fast personal growth and quick acceleration into management wouldn’t be possible without the continuous training you get at SThree. There’s the Special Trainee Program, Consultant Training Program and Management Training Program. Each one has helped me immeasurably. They also have several training centres across the globe tailored to the specific phase of your career. It’s an incredible set up.

When I first started I got so much training, in various styles of teaching, that when I didn’t get something, I simply learned it another way. This allowed me to deal with leading clients in my market far sooner than I thought possible.

Working at SThree

Each day I’m here makes me realise that my career has developed so quickly. I’ve had so many opportunities. And it’s not like I’m an exception, or I was lucky in the market – my office is full of people like me. SThree has created an environment where there are international and national opportunities every day – for everybody.

You have to be willing to put in the effort though. It’s a competitive environment and recruitment can sometimes be cruel. But when you’re working here, you know you’ll be supported through the bad times and rewarded for the good.

If I look around our office in Amsterdam, or when I visit our offices around the world, it’s great to see and feel the ambition and excitement in the room. This culture and being part of such a unique environment makes me very proud. You’re in control of your own career here. That’s what makes SThree such a fast-growing and inspiring company to work for. I’m excited to keep going the extra mile every day!
